What Odoo is

Odoo is an open-source enterprise system with modules for invoicing, warehouse, CRM, manufacturing, an e-shop and more. Its strength is that it combines the advantages of a ready-made solution with the option of significant customization — without licenses for every line of code.

When Odoo is a great choice

• You want to cover several areas (warehouse, invoicing, CRM) with a single system.
• Your processes are mostly standard, with a few specifics.
• You want a faster start than building from scratch and lower costs than large ERPs.
• You appreciate that the system is open and you're not locked in with a single supplier.

Where Odoo has its limits

• If your core is a process that differs significantly from Odoo's logic, customization gets expensive.
• Very specific or performance-intensive parts are sometimes better built custom.
• Excessively „bending“ Odoo against its own logic makes later updates harder.

The decision rule

Put simply: the more standard your processes, the sooner Odoo; the more unique your business core, the sooner custom. A combination is also common and sensible — Odoo for the standard (accounting, warehouse) and a custom module for what makes you different, connected via API.
